The Paul Miller Show is a popular programme that is broadcast every night on the BBC's local radio stations in the south of England. The format of the show includes a phone in slot where a guest takes calls and questions on a particular theme. On the 10th May 2005, David Hawkes, the proprieter of Ferndown Wholesale Confectioners, was the invited guest when the theme of the show was chocolate and confectionery. David was a very popular visitor to the Radio Solent studios in Southampton, possibly because he took along big box of sweets and chocolates for Paul and his team to try! Paul gave plenty of build up to the phone in, prior to it starting at 11pm. And it is probably fair to say that the station was inundated with phone calls and emails from people sharing their memories of their favourite sweets from their childhood, and to find out whether they were still available. The slot was originally intended to last for an hour, but it proved so popular that David ended up staying until the end of the show at 1am. The topics covered included aniseed balls, iced caramels, buttered brazils, liquorice comfits, candy sticks, ABC cachous, rhubarb and custards - and much more. And to the amusement of the rest of us back at base, David was also compared to a certain well known fictional chocolate factory owner...
Following the success of his first visit, David was invited back on Tuesday 6th December
2005 to again talk about sweets and chocolates in the run up to Christmas. It's likely
that David will be appearing on the Paul Miller show again in the near future, so stay
tuned for more news. In the mean time, if there are products that you are finding difficult to source
to find then please contact David.
